Microbiology Doctoral Training Program (MDTP)

In 1998, MMI (School of Medicine and Public Health) and Bacteriology (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) integrated their graduate training programs to yield the MDTP, which is one of the largest and strongest graduate programs on campus and one of the most highly regarded in its field nationally.  Since then, UW-Madison has regularly ranked in the top tier of microbiology graduate programs in several objective surveys.  For example, the U.S. News & World Report annual educational rankings, which are widely recognized and important for graduate recruitment (albeit carrying limitations), has placed UW-Madison in the top 3 Microbiology graduate programs since at least 1997, with the latest ranking update made in 2007.  The development of the MDTP has been remarkably effective and successful for graduate recruiting and training purposes; it is this PhD degree-granting program that serves as the main source of pre-doctoral trainees for this training program.  The co-director of this T32 Training Program (Goodrich-Blair) is currently director of the MDTP.  This graduate program has 92 faculty, over half of whom are from departments other than MMI or Bacteriology.  There are currently about 100 MDTP students. Members of this student group who join the laboratories of trainers on this application will be eligible for consideration for support by this training grant.
